What is EEG Biofeedback?
EEG Biofeedback or Neurofeedback is a painless, non-invasive treatment
approach that measures the natural electrical activity of the brain as it
performs a task. Scientists have long recognized that certain illnesses
produce distinctive brain-wave patterns. Neurofeedback is thought to reset
these patterns, so that the brain performs at optimal levels. With practice,
one learns to reproduce the effects at home, without the doctor or biofeedback
device.
How is Neurofeedback done?
The individual's brainwave activity is measured with an electroencephalograph
(EEG). The EEG Biofeedback equipment is connected to the individual with
sensors that are placed on the scalp and ears. Once connected, the
individual's brainwave activity can be observed on a computer monitor.
Individuals are then taught to play computerized games using their brainwave
activity. Changes in the individual's brainwave activity are then fed back to
the individual through visual and/or auditory information by the computer.
Clients also practice maintaining learned brainwave states when engaged in
school- or work-related tasks (e.g., reading, writing). This will help them use
what they learned in Neurofeedback in their daily activities.
Through changes in brainwave activity, reductions in symptoms are expected
to occur. Individuals who have received Neurofeeback have also reported
improvements in school or work performance, social relationships, and
self-esteem, as well as reduction in irritability and oppositional behavior.
How Does it Help?
Neurofeedback addresses many neurological problems as well as
optimizing mental flexibility for executives and enhancing peak
performance for athletes.

Are There Side Effects?
Only rarely have significant side effects from neurofeedback
training been noted. However, occasionally someone may feel
tired, spacey, anxious, experience a headache, have difficulty
falling asleep, or feel agitated or irritable. Many of these feelings
pass within a short time after a training session. If you make your
therapist aware of such feelings, they can alter training protocols
and usually quickly eliminate such mild adverse effects.
